Will window film really help? 

Yes...

We have many skeptical people that inquire to us that if installing window film will really help to reduce heat, fading, and glare in there office or home. the answer is yes, it sells itself if installed properly. The most common inquiries we get are newly constructed buildings and homes (and we get our fair share of older structures too).

Now days, the use of larger, more numerous windows are being used in architectural design more than ever before. While this adds beauty to a structure it also creates a host of detrimental effects.

The most dramatic resulting effect as to why people here in Texas use window film on homes and offices is for more comfort, fade protection, reduced energy bills, and less wear and tear on air conditioning systems because of the climate being so hot here.

Homes with numerous large windows for example, are typical of what we deal with quite often as well as commercial buildings with large unprotected windows. Let's say for example, a home that has been built in a new sub-division that has been cleared of trees, not having any shade cast on the house all day long, needs all the help it can get from the intense sun light that bakes away all day long during peak temperature months. To compound matters even more, the air conditioning systems that comes with most of these new structures are usually close to bare minimum systems designed to pass minimum allowed building codes to save on costs (and you probably know what we mean if your here researching window tinting for your house or office). Though adequate most of the year, this results in an air conditioning system that struggles during the most intense day light hours. Aside from using blinds, shutters and drapes that don't allow light in, window film alone or together with other window treatments can make a substantial difference in the amount of cycles a day that the a.c. turns on and off (can reject up to 79% of the sun's heat passing through the windows). The room(s) will feel noticeably more comfortable with less heat and glare passing through the windows. On the other end of the spectrum, winter heat loss through windows can cause discomfort to building occupants and unnecessarily high energy bills. Low emissivity insulating film applied to the inside face of ordinary single-pane windows can decrease heat loss through the windows by up to 30%.These equate to savings on energy bills and maintenance costs which can literally pay for the initial cost of the window tinting installation over the next few following years.

Substantially Reduce Fading

Solar window film will also substantially reduce fading of carpets, drapes, and other  furnishings resulting from solar energy passing through your windows beaming in on them. Bear in mind that nothing will eliminate fading totally because the causes are a bit more than solar energy passing through your glass. Causes of fading that passes through your windows that window film will substantially eliminate or significantly reduce equates to 40% ultraviolet light (UV),  25% heat (including infrared light),  25% visible light. The other 10% that causes fading other than what's passing through your windows are artificial indoor lighting, humidity and poor dye anchorage. High quality solar control window films will help protect objects such as displayed in museums, shop windows and similar environments. They filter out at least 99% of the harmful UV, reject infrared heat, reduce visible light transmission and still leave a pleasantly lit environment.  :)

What is the best film you have? 

It's all good...

It really depends on what window type scenario verses the needs you have. They all do a great job for specific functions. In looking at the specifications of each of the film types, it may seem easy enough to go with the highest numbers or percentages of the specifications.  However certain films are not recommended for certain applications while others are.  A good over all film that meets most problem solar blockage needs would be R20 (silver reflective) for interior mounted applications which has a total solar energy rejection of 79% and RK20 (silver reflective) for exterior mounted applications which has a TSER of 81%. What do you mean when you say film is "recommended" for the glass? 

When we recommended or don't recommended for a particular glass, we are referring to thermal stress compatibility. Thermal stress compatibility is one of the biggest issues regarding the use of window films on residential and commercial glass. Other potential problems, such as seal failure, delamination of laminated glass, etc., occur far less often.

Thermal stress compatibility of window film with glass relates to the possibility of glass thermal stress breakage. Installing solar control window film on clear glass will always have a low rate of naturally occurring thermal stress breakage. Using a window film "recommended" for clear single pane annealed glass for example (with well-cut, undamaged edges) will ensure that an acceptably low risk of thermal stress breakage remains after the film has been installed. Instances of thermal stress  glass breakages after window film installations are almost always due either incompatible film-to-glass applications or glass with poor quality edges to begin with (that might crack any way, without window film installed).

If a desired film is found to be incompatible with the glass then either a different film must be used or the glass must be changed for a type with higher thermal stress strength. Toughened (tempered or heat strengthened) glass has much higher thermal stress strength than annealed glass. It is extremely unlikely that tempered glass will break  because of thermal stress and therefore almost any window film can be used on toughened glass. Most commercial buildings built within modern building codes out there use tempered or toughened heat strengthened glass. Most residential windows use annealed glass with the exception of glass doors or super over sized windows.

Film to glass thermal stress compatibility is relative to the specific site conditions. If those conditions change then the thermal stress compatibility of the film with the glass may also change and a re-assessment may be needed.

Can I install window film on dual pane windows? My glass manufacturer claims it will crack glass and blow out seals.

Yes you can with no problems if you use the correct film application.

Llumar ® is offered in many window films that are safe to apply to dual-pane and, in some cases, even triple-pane windows. They carefully analyze the glass and air-space temperatures of windows with solar film applied before recommending any film for multiple-pane windows. They then compare these temperatures to temperatures of tinted windows from the glass or window manufacturer, so-called manufacturer's original equipment or OEM. These films do not cause an air-space temperature increase any greater than OEM tinted glass and, therefore, are safe to apply in most cases. Can you make my window one way privacy glass?

We have many that call us wanting to use solar control window film to create a privacy partition so no on can see through day or night. There are two ways in attempting to do this. First we'll address using solar control films.

Solar Control Films
Bear in mind that solar control film is made for solar control and privacy is an added benefit. Window film will work very well for daytime purposes when the inside lighting is dimmer that the outside lighting. However at night, things usually reverse to where prying eyes can see in (unless you have the curtains or blinds drawn). This is caused by interior lights being on and it being darker outside than inside. The only way you can make things work like a one way mirror or privacy partition at night is if you can keep the inside of the building darker than the outside at ALL times (day and night) which night time equates to bright lighting on the exterior and keeping the interior lighting dimmer.

Frosted or Blackout Films
The other option would be to use frosted matt or blackout films. These films diffuse light to prevent clear visibility in both directions, providing a very high level of privacy day and night. The downside of this is that clear outward visibility in daylight hours is eliminated as well. With a white frost film, substantial light may still be allowed to enter the building, and nothing beyond moving shapes would be noticeable. Shadows, however, can be cast on these translucent films at night (from strong back-lighting) which are distinctly visible from the exterior. Bear in mind that these films as well as solar control films increase thermal stress to the glass (especially Blackout films) and you should always go with a recommended film according to the glass and pane type you have. Will film on my windows cause problems with my house plants? 

While window film reduces solar energy passing through windows and helps protect carpets, art works and interior furnishings and fabrics, it has no adverse effects on plant health. As quoted from Llumar ® documentation, is because the photoreceptors in plants typically absorb in the visible light wavelengths of 450 nm, 660 nm, and 730 nm. Laminated glass, which has a UV absorbing interlayer of PVB, is commonly used in greenhouses and atriums to help protect flower color and reproductive development from the damaging effects of UV radiation. With a solar control film (which can block well over 99% of UV radiation), one needs to be chiefly concerned with the amount of visible light blocked. Films that have a Visible Light Transmittance of 29% or greater should present no special problem for most plants.

Llumar ® Facts: Plant Growth & Window Films

Fact #1

According to landscape horticulturist Dr. Robert E. Moon of the Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A & M University, the lack of ultraviolet rays does not in any way affect the natural growth of either desert or tropical plants. The only light rays that plants require for natural growth are far reds, red, and blues; and these colors are not part of the ultraviolet color spectrum. Blue and red light, which plants absorb, have the greatest effect on plant growth. Blue light is responsible primarily for vegetative (leaf) growth. Thus, red light, when combined with blue light, encourages flowering. Plants look green to us because they reflect, rather than absorb, green light.

Fact #2

Most tropical plants require less light and heat than they now receive. Proper Llumar ® film will provide adequate light, while reflecting sufficient heat, allowing plants to grow naturally, without drying or burning leaves.

Fact #3

Variegated plants, or light green plants, require more light than plants that are darker green. (Dark green plants have more chlorophyll and so can take better advantage of available light for photosynthesis.)

Fact #4

If your first concern is amount of heat gain and heat loss, combined with concern for plant life, choose R-35 with a 29% light transmission instead of R-20 with only 18%. N1050 will allow 50% of visible light transmission through 1/4" glass. So, if your plants in a single area or in different areas, select the proper film for special needs.

Fact #5

R-15B, R-15G, and R-15G0 aren't recommended for plant growth. R-30B and R-30G will not harm plants; however, because of reduced light transmissions, natural plant growth will be slowed. Some plants may go into a state of shock for a few days, adjusting to the new light. If, after a week, plants are still in shock (leaves wilting or losing color), we strongly recommend they be placed in another room where they will receive more light. Otherwise, consider using a plant bulb.

What do the "surface numbers" mean as applied to a dual pane windows?

If you noticed strange surface numbers being shown on our Recommended Film Calculator and it appears they might apply to your application, an explanation of what these numbers represent are explained as follows:

Used in the glass industry, these surface numbers are a reference to a glass's surface position starting from the exterior of a building. Surface #1 is the surface on the exterior of a building that is directly exposed to the outside elements. In a dual pane, there are 4 surfaces. Surface #4 is the interior room-side surface of the inner pane. Surface #3 is the outer surface of the inner pane. Surface #2 is the inner surface of the outer pane. Can you tint my skylight(s)? If so, what do you recommend?

Yes, IF your glass type is real glass and once again, meets certain conditions. No if they're some type of plastic, access is nine million feet from the floor creating a severe flight risk, or access up a long narrow fragile sheet rock light passage way requiring a 2 inch person with their toe nails retracted in to do it....

Films should not be applied to plastic surfaces, unless a given product has been specifically approved for that purpose (and most are not). For clear glass skylights (including laminated glass skylights) the following films are recommended: R20, R35, R50.

For tinted glass skylights all of the above films are acceptable UNLESS the skylight contains tinted, laminated glass. DO NOT apply ANY films to tinted, laminated glass (where the tint is in the laminated glass and not in a separate glass pane), unless the individual layers making up the laminated pane are heat-strengthened or tempered glass.

What are those water blister spots in my freshly installed film?

This the normal part of the drying process after window film has been freshly installed (commercial, residential, automobiles, etc...). Water pockets appearing as small blisters through out the film and any foggy appearances will clear up in a few days to a couple of weeks depending on temperature and humidity of the windows environment. Some larger water pockets (if any) may take longer, but rest assure they will clear as time goes on. 

These descriptions described above above are the result from the window film being installed with water. Water is an essential ingredient in the installation process for film positioning in the "home" spot and to activate the film's adhesive and initiate the film to glass bond (the water causes the adhesive to bind to the glass).

Do not attempt to blatantly smash or press water pockets out for this will leave unsightly adhesive scars in the areas surrounding the pocket where the film has already bound.

Rarely, but some times a larger than normal pocket may develop and seem to remain long past the rest of the film clearing. These still will clear over time and still does not present any problems, however if it should be in an area that is bothersome, the procedure to remove it to accelerate its clearing would be to create an extreme small pin hole using a sharp pin or preferably an extreme point of a fresh razor blade made at a farthest edge of the water pocket to release the water by squeegeeing the water out starting from the opposite side of the water pocket from where the pin hole was made and using a hard card of some plastic type wrapped in a paper towel or soft cotton cloth. The paper towel or cloth prevents scratching from the card type used and absorbs the water as it exits the pin hole. We don't recommend doing this procedure unless you have at least some type experience dealing things of this nature.

Please do not attempt to sit and watch the drying process of the freshly installed film for this would be comparable to watching grass grow :).

Are there any medical benefits using solar control window film?

Llumar ® documentation quote:
Certainly individuals who have diseases which are exacerbated by exposure to UV radiation have the potential to benefit from products which dramatically reduce UV exposure. We are careful to avoid making medical claims about our Llumar ® film products since, due to exposure to UV or chemical environments outside the vehicle (or home) as well as pre-existing conditions or family history, individuals cannot eliminate the risk of developing skin cancer by simply using solar control  film products, though their use may be of profound value. UVShield™ is approved and recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation. This clear un-tinted film is an excellent UV blocker that blocks 99.9% ultraviolet light which is the most blockage out of all the films available. It won't do much for heat blockage like most tinted films will, but if 99% UV blockage is not enough that's achieved by traditional films or if you want maximum UV blockage without a tinted appearance then this is a good one for you. How do I care for my window film?

We usually tell people just to treat their window tinting like the paint on their car (except no waxing ) and just don't let it get so dirty you can grow potatoes on it. Clean your window film with mild soap and water on the inside (which is where the film is installed) and on the outside of the glass you can use whatever you like.   

* Note* Use of harsh cleaners such as Windex TM or other ammonia based cleaners if used on any window films out there WILL shorten the life span of the window film.    

We only recommend using a damp towel or a mild dish washing soap and water solution mixture (ratio we like is 1 small drop of liquid soap, or baby shampoo, to 1 quart of water (1 quart spray bottle) or a professional silicone polish/cleaner made specifically for use on window film only. You can remove stubborn garbage such as  chewing gum and crayons (kids), old tape adhesive (from notes, signs, or stickers stuck to the film) etc... by using a very small amount of 100% mineral spirits (not lacquer thinner!) and a soft towel if not done on a regular basis and used very moderately.

Can it be installed on plastic (Plexiglass™) or polycarbonate (Lexan™)?

We do not recommend this nor do we install film on it. However below is  Llumar ® documentation regarding this question we are asked often which may be beneficial to you in answering the question you have been searching for:

The answer is somewhat complex. Generally speaking, the simple and flat answer (as of January 2000) is "NO," though research is always on-going and new specialty products more compatible with plastic sheeting are always a future possibility. These are the facts, which should all be taken into account before taking any action:
    (1) Generally, the installation of films on acrylic sheeting (such as Plexiglas™) results in chemical out-gassing between the film and the acrylic sheeting, causing random, large, and unsightly blistering of the film away from the plastic surface. The effect is hastened when the acrylic is exposed to sunlight and can occur within weeks or months after the installation.
    (2) With polycarbonate (Lexan™) sheeting, the out-gassing phenomenon is sometimes less pronounced, and sometimes does not occur at all, especially if the polycarbonate sheeting has an SR coating on it. There is reason to believe that newer formulations of polycarbonate have minimal or no out-gassing problems.
    (3) Sun-exposed, semi-rigid plastic sheeting of these types (polycarbonates and acrylics), when film is installed on them, expand and contract to a degree many times that of glass, causing severe shear stresses at the film/sheet interface which in turn can produce "fingering" in the film, giving the appearance that the sheeting has cracked.
    (4) This expansion and contraction can also cause flexing of the panel, bowing the sheet into either a concave or a convex "lens" shape. If the panel is sun-exposed and concave in shape (inwardly bowed), a highly reflective film on the surface can cause the window to become a large solar collection mirror, throwing back solar radiation into a small, tightly focused region, and in very rare cases cause severe burn-damage to objects outside the building on the ground at the focal point of this great "lens."
    (5) Removing film and adhesive from plastic glazing is almost always extremely difficult without causing at least some (and often major) damage to the sheet. Often the classic "sweating" methods will work well (provided that film has not been stripped away). Some types of alcohol are helpful in removing PS adhesives after the film has been stripped away. CDF adhesive does not respond well to any known method of removal without potential damage to the plastic sheeting. Thus, it is easy to see why such installations are currently neither recommended nor approved for any form of warranty coverage. But bear in mind that new products may appear in the future that will allow for easy removability and solve the out-gassing problem.

How much do you charge to install some for me?

There are several factors involved that affect the cost

 Pricing is based on the amount of square footage, access to the windows, amount of preparation work needed for clean installations, and the film type  required.

Usually prices installed range from $5.00 per square foot (most common) through $12.00 for most applications we see depending on the particular job variables using genuine Llumar ® film.

*We do offer a great quality house brand equivalent film alternative for less cost per square foot than shown below for budget minded applications.*

Let's see if we can explain how our pricing is derived below:

$5.00 - $7.00 Per Sq. Ft. Price Range Depending On Variables:
This is our most common price range we usually see and is what we charge for doing over a total of 400 square feet. High quality standard film rolls come in 100 linear feet lengths and is the cheapest way to obtain it. Let's say for example, that a common larger job that will consume the better part of a standard sized full 5' X 100' roll (500 square feet) using a standard film type and does not have any major obstacles to do the job efficiently and cost effectively. The price to have us install it is closer to the lower end of the $5.00-$7.00 price range. Usually $5.00-5.50 per square foot in most cases, using the most common chosen Llumar ® film types. This is what the majority of our average jobs we do usually run. Using our house brand equivalent film is less than shown here.

Added variable costs for jobs over 400 square feet usually runs towards the higher end of the $5.00-$7.00 price range and these variables are listed below:

  1. Higher end film types needed such as DR or DL series films or other.

  2. Specialty partition film types such as white-out or black-out films or other.

  3. Some what difficult access to the windows.

  4. Standard blind, shutter, drapery removal etc....

  5. Tall ladders being involved less than 12 feet (creating a flight risk...).

  6. Out of the ordinary prep work being needed (old crusty gasket edges, having to heavily mask many surfaces, etc...).

  7. Added out of the ordinary additional costs required to do the job.

$6.00 - $9.00 Per Sq. Ft. Price Range Depending On Variables:
Usually jobs between 400 and 100 square feet starts out with a base price of $6.00 per square foot plus any added variable costs listed above using genuine Llumar ® film :

$7.50 - $11.00 Per Sq. Ft. Price Range Depending On Variables:
Usually jobs between 100 and 25 square feet starts out with a base price of $7.50 per square foot plus any added variable costs listed above using genuine Llumar ® film :

$12.00 or more Per Sq. Ft. Price Range Depending On Variables:
Usually jobs requiring less than 25 square feet starts out with a base price of $12.00 per square foot (and/or added variables listed below)
using genuine Llumar ® film :

  1. Higher priced high end film being used such as an exterior grade RK20, or super strong security films.

  2. Extreme difficult access to the windows.

  3. Removal of pre-existing film ($50.00 per hour added).

  4. Blind, shutter, drapery removal etc....(many, many of them and/or difficult access to them sometimes broken down to $50.00 per hour).

  5. Tall ladders being involved more than 12 feet (waaayy up there creating a major liability...).

  6. The worst of the worst out of the ordinary prep work being needed (old crusty gasket edges, having to heavily mask many surfaces, etc...). Sometimes we just elect not to get involved with these..........period.

  7. Added out of the ordinary additional costs required to do the job. i.e.: Equipment rental, glass removal, and yes we'll say it, crazy clowns being involved etc....

Pre-existing film removal is priced at $50.00 per hour

We sometimes have people needing old inferior worn out film removed before installation of their new film. Film removal is priced by the hour because removals vary from one job to the next. For example, a typical 3'X6' window requiring common removal techniques should only take approximately a half an hour or so to completely remove it to the point as to it had never seen tint before (equating to $25.00). However, not all are that easy-breezy. Old "sun-baked" low quality film takes longer due to the fact of it being brittle and breaking off in ones finger tips while pulling it off, thus increasing the time and cuss word factor. We might suggest replacing it with a high quality film with a good factory backed warranty done by someone that knows what they are doing so you don't have to go through this scenario again.

Do you have a physical address or do you work out of a 5 gallon bucket?

Yes we do. We put this segment in here simply for you to beware of fly-by-night film installers out there working out of a five gallon bucket that disappears into the night.... Feel free to come by our shop and look at film samples any time during our normal business hours. Normally we do not ship or mail film samples.

Can you come out and give me an estimate?

To get an online quote for FREE for your particular application and measurements, we have provided our online Flat Glass Self Estimator HERE to get a good idea of what your windows will run to have window film professionally installed by Blair's Texas Window Tinting and more. If what you find there sounds acceptable for you, then please contact us to come manually see what you have and double check things for you.

Due to the high cost of gas these days, we do charge a $25.00 estimate fee prior to coming out and us manually configuring an estimate or proposal. This fee is credited back to the job price if the installation is done by us and all is good. However, it is worth mentioning, that we do try to refrain as much as possible from running around town wasting our and your time giving out free comparison estimates all day long for someone simply looking for a lowest budget priced slacker job.

**NOTE**

It's also worth being said that high quality film installations do cost a bit more and that's all we will deal in. What we are trying to convey here is not to turn you off, but rather help you understand that is not the kind of ship we are running here. We feel (just like parachute purchases or any thing else) that you might pay a little more up front for better quality, but the long run benefits out weighs the initial cost difference. So if your needing something that will perform and last you a long time and are serious about having us do it with high quality film, then please feel free to call or email us and we'll be glad to handle things for you.

These are applicable only if used with tested safe applications according film-to-glass recommendations and installed by an authorized installer in the U.S. or Canada.
